Poverty is a fact of life in Kenya with the government acknowledging that one in two Kenyans is living below poverty line of earnings of less than $1 per day. This poverty puts extra pressure on parents with mentally disabled persons and their survival becomes of paramount importance. Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped helps parents to set up income generating projects and activities so that they are able to look after their mentally disabled children better. The income generating activities are individual as well as group oriented.
Kanyariri Parents Group is successfully running a chicken project in Kikuyu. The project has boosted their incomes and they are better able to take care of their mentally disabled children.
